Teiwaz Rune — The Warrior, Justice, and Sacred Courage

Teiwaz (also spelled Tiwaz, Tyr, or Teiws) is the seventeenth rune of the Elder Futhark, and it carries one of the most heroic and morally serious energies in the entire runic system. Named for Tyr — the Norse god of justice, law, and heroic self-sacrifice — Teiwaz represents the courage to act with integrity even when the cost is enormous, the commitment to truth even when it demands sacrifice, and the clarity of mind that comes from perfect alignment between action and principle.

The Shape of Teiwaz

Teiwaz is shaped like an upward-pointing arrow or spear — a simple vertical stave with two upward-angled arms forming a pointed apex. The arrow points upward: toward the sky, toward higher principles, toward the divine order that Tyr embodies and serves. This upward orientation is essential to the rune's meaning: Teiwaz energy does not operate from base self-interest but from a higher alignment.

The Myth of Tyr and Fenrir

The story that most completely expresses Teiwaz's meaning is the binding of Fenrir, the great wolf who was prophesied to break free and devour Odin himself at Ragnarok. The gods needed to bind Fenrir before he grew too powerful, but after breaking every physical chain with ease, Fenrir agreed to be bound by the magical ribbon Gleipnir only on one condition: that a god place their hand in his mouth as a guarantee of good faith. If the binding proved treacherous, at least the god would pay the price.

Tyr volunteered. When Fenrir found he could not break free and realized he had been deceived, he bit off Tyr's hand at the wrist. Tyr lost his hand — his most essential instrument as a warrior and a god — but the binding held, and the cosmos was protected for another age.

This myth is the perfect expression of Teiwaz energy: the willingness to act for the greater good at personal cost, the knowledge that justice sometimes requires sacrifice, and the quiet courage of fulfilling an obligation even when the price is terrible.

Teiwaz Upright: Meaning in Divination

Victory through righteous action — Teiwaz is one of the most powerful omens of success in the Elder Futhark, but specifically success achieved through integrity and courage rather than cleverness or luck. If you are acting from a place of genuine justice and principle, Teiwaz upright says: press forward. Victory will come.

Justice and legal matters — In questions involving law, courts, disputes, or the fair resolution of conflicts, Teiwaz is a strongly positive omen. It favors the side that is genuinely in the right. If you are honestly on the right side of a dispute, Teiwaz tells you to trust the process.

The courage to do what is right — Teiwaz appears when a situation demands that you act with courage and principle, even at personal cost. This is not reckless bravado but the sober, deliberate courage of a person who knows the cost of what is right and pays it willingly.

Leadership and responsibility — Tyr is a god of governance and right order. Teiwaz upright indicates that leadership responsibilities may be calling, or that you are being called to take personal responsibility for a situation rather than waiting for someone else to act.

Masculine strength and discipline — Teiwaz carries strong associations with disciplined, principled masculine energy — not toxic aggression, but the focused, sacrificial strength of a person who stands for something larger than themselves. This energy is available to anyone, regardless of gender.

Clarity of purpose — The upward-pointing arrow of Teiwaz represents a life aimed at something higher. When this rune appears, it signals a period of unusual clarity about what matters most and what you are willing to sacrifice for it.

Teiwaz Reversed: Justice Compromised

When Teiwaz appears reversed, its energy is blocked, misdirected, or depleted:

Injustice and unfair outcomes — Legal or conflict situations may not resolve fairly. Someone is not acting with integrity, or the system itself is compromised. Caution and reconsideration of strategy are warranted.

Loss of will or courage — The energy of Teiwaz reversed is exhaustion, self-doubt, and the failure of nerve. You know what is right but cannot find the courage to do it. Or you have been fighting for so long that the fight has drained you.

Self-interest over principle — Teiwaz reversed can indicate that self-serving motives have corrupted what should be principled action. Are you actually fighting for justice, or for your own advantage disguised as justice?

Excessive sacrifice — Like Tyr who gave his hand, there is a limit to how much sacrifice is appropriate. Teiwaz reversed may signal that you are giving too much, that the cost being asked of you exceeds what is just, or that martyrdom has become a role rather than a genuine calling.

Working With Teiwaz

Teiwaz is an excellent rune for:

Legal and conflict situations — Inscribe Teiwaz on a blue candle (the color of truth and justice) and light it when facing legal proceedings, mediation, or formal disputes. Its energy supports just outcomes.

Cultivating courage and discipline — For those working to develop greater personal discipline, moral courage, or leadership capacity, Teiwaz can be drawn or visualized as a tool for invoking the energy of principled action.

Warriors and athletes — In the historical runic tradition, Teiwaz was carved into weapons and shields to invoke Tyr's victory energy before battle. For modern athletes, competitors, or anyone in a high-stakes contest, Teiwaz remains a powerful ally — specifically when you are competing with integrity.

At arcanum.guru, our rune readings regularly draw Teiwaz in situations involving ethical dilemmas, legal challenges, and questions of courage. Its message is always one of the most morally serious in the runic tradition: know what you stand for, be willing to pay for it, and act.
